Lech am Arlberg

Cradle of alpine skiing

Lech am Arlberg is regarded as the cradle of alpine skiing: the first ski lift opened here as early as 1939. Set in a magnificent mountain landscape in the east of Vorarlberg lies the old Walser settlement of LECH. Its name comes from the river that rises 11 km to the south-west on the Alpe Formarin, at the lake of the same name.

Where the valley opens out into a wide, almost level high plateau, the village of Lech spreads out at an altitude of 1,440 to 1,800 m, together with the hamlets of Zug, Zürs and Oberlech.

Many visitors spend their skiing holiday in the Ski Arlberg region, which extends across the provinces of Vorarlberg and Tyrol. Further winter activities include tobogganing (the Lech-Oberlech toboggan run is open daily from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m.), ski touring, heli-skiing and freeriding.

Lech is also known for the „Weisser Ring” – one of the longest ski races in the world, covering 22 kilometres of piste and 5,500 metres of altitude. From Hotel Salome you are down in the valley in Lech am Arlberg in just a few turns on skis, or within minutes by car or with the Oberlech cable car.
